militaristic は military に -istic「…に傾いた」が付いた語で、核の milit- はラテン語 miles「兵士」にさかのぼります。military や militia と同根で、「軍に関する」が「軍事を理想化する」へ強まったので、「軍国主義的な」が腑に落ちます。
Militaristic was formed from military plus the ending -istic, meaning "having the character of" or "inclined toward." The root milit- goes back to Latin miles, meaning "soldier."
