Idiopathic describes a disease or medical condition whose exact cause is unknown. It is mainly used in medical contexts by doctors and researchers. The word does not describe the severity of the condition, only that the reason for it has not been identified.

まず pathology の path を見て「病気系の語」と結びつけると入りやすいです。idiopathic は医学英語で病名の前につきやすく、idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, idiopathic scoliosis のように「原因が特定できないタイプの」というラベル感で出ます。secondary to another disease（他疾患に続発した）と対比すると覚えやすく、congenital や hereditary のように原因が生まれつき・遺伝で見えている語とは違う、と整理すると定着します。

idiopathic はギリシャ語 idios「固有の」+ pathos「病・苦しみ」から成る。つまり『ほかの原因ではなく、その病気自体に固有の』という感覚で、医学の「特発性」にぴたりとはまる。idiom, pathology も同じ語根を含む。
