解説 Definition
congenital は、病気や特徴などが生まれた時点ですでにあることを表す形容詞です。遺伝による場合もありますが、妊娠中の環境などが原因で起こることもあり、必ずしも遺伝性とは限りません。医学では congenital heart defect のように「先天性の」という意味でよく使われます。
Congenital means existing from the time a person is born. It is most often used for diseases, conditions, or physical characteristics that are present at birth. The word does not always mean the condition was inherited from parents.
