Miles is the plural of mile. Mile comes through Old English and Latin from the Roman expression mille passūs, literally “a thousand paces.” Latin mille means “thousand,” while passūs refers to paces. A Roman mile was therefore based on a measured sequence of steps, although its length was not identical to the modern international mile. The current standardized international mile equals exactly 1,609.344 meters.
