イタリア語 mezzana（中間の）からフランス語 misaine を経て英語に。ラテン語 medianus（中間の）が語源で、元は中央の帆柱を指したが、英語では三本マストの最後尾の帆柱を意味するようになった。関連語：mezzanine（中二階）。
Mizzen came into English through French from Italian mezzana. The deeper root is Latin medianus, meaning "middle." It seems to have first referred to a middle sail or mast, but in English ship language it shifted to the rearmost mast on a three-masted ship. A related English word is mezzanine, which also comes from the idea of being in the middle.
