motivating の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ラテン語 movēre(動かす)の過去分詞 motus から派生した motive(動機)に -ate(〜させる)と -ing を付けた形。語根 mot- は「動き」を意味し、motion(運動)やpromotion(促進)と同根。「心を動かす」が原義。
Motivating is formed from motivate by dropping the final silent e and adding -ing. Motivate developed from motive, ultimately connected with Latin movere, meaning “to move,” through its past-participial stem mot-. The underlying image is that a reason or influence moves a person toward action. The same Latin root appears in motion and related words involving movement.
