motte は、中世の城で木造や石造の塔を載せた土の丘で、通常は人工的に築かれたものです。モット・アンド・ベーリー式の城郭を説明する歴史用語です。
A motte is a raised mound of earth, usually artificial, on which a fortified wooden or stone tower was built as part of a medieval motte-and-bailey castle.
