Motte は、中世の城で防御のために築かれた土の盛り上がりや丘を指します。特に木や石の塔を上に建てた「モット・アンド・ベーリー」式の城郭を説明するときに使われる歴史用語です。
A motte is a raised mound of earth, usually artificial, on which a fortified wooden or stone tower was built as part of a medieval motte-and-bailey castle.
