木の版に彫刻を施し、それを使って印刷した芸術作品。伝統的な版画技法の一種。
A woodcut is a picture printed from a design cut into a block of wood. It can also mean the artistic method itself or the wooden block used for printing. The word is mainly used in art, printing, and book history.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
woodcut は wood「木」と cut「彫る・切る」をそのまま結びつけると覚えやすい語です。まず木の板に刃物で線を刻む場面を思い浮かべ、そのあとインクをのせて刷る流れまでセットで想像すると、「木版画」の意味が定着します。point は cut が入るので、ただ木に描くのでなく“削って版を作る”こと。painting より print の仲間、metal plate を使う engraving とは違って、木の板を使う版画だと対比すると混同しにくいです。

wood は古英語 wudu「木」、cut は古ノルド語由来で「切る」。二語がそのまま組み合わさり、木を彫って版を作る技法から「木版画」の意味になりました。wooden や cutter に同じ語源感覚が残ります。
Woodcut combines wood, from Old English, and cut, a word that came into English from Old Norse. The literal idea is cutting into wood. From that physical process, the word came to mean both the carved block and the print made from it.
