neti の語源・成り立ち Etymology
サンスクリット語 netī に由来し、語根は nī「導く・通す」。netra「導くもの→目」や Hindi の neta「指導者」と同根で、鼻に水を通して道を開く動作がそのまま名になった語だ。だから器具名 neti pot も、道具より先に行法を指す。
Neti comes from Sanskrit netī, a word used for the cleansing practice itself. It is linked to the root nī, meaning "to lead" or "to guide through." The idea is of passing water through the nasal passage to clear a path, and only later was the name also used in compounds like neti pot.
