電荷を持たず、極めて小さい質量を持つ素粒子です。太陽や超新星、宇宙線、放射性崩壊などに関わって生じ、物質とほとんど反応せずに通り抜けます。そのため検出が非常に難しい粒子として知られています。
A neutrino is an extremely small particle studied in physics. It has almost no mass and can pass through matter very easily, so it is very difficult to detect. The word is mainly used in science and advanced education.

neutrino はイタリア語で、neutro「中性の」+ -ino「小さいもの」から作られた『小さな中性粒子』という名です。neutral や neutron と同じ語根を共有し、電荷をもたず非常に小さい存在だという性質が、そのまま名前に埋め込まれています。
Neutrino comes from Italian, built from neutro, meaning "neutral," and the suffix -ino, meaning something small. It was coined as the name for a very small neutral particle. It shares its root with English neutral and neutron.
