ラテン語 occupare（つかむ、占める）が語源。ob-（～に向かって）+ capere（つかむ）に分解でき、「場所をつかみ取る」が原義。同根語に capture（捕獲）や capable（有能な）がある。物理的に場所を占めることから、時間や注意を「占める」意味にも広がった。
