ラテン語 occurrere（ob-「～に向かって」+ currere「走る」）に由来。「目の前に走り出てくる」が原義で、出来事が「起こる・生じる」意味に発展した。current（流れ）やconcur（同意する）も同じcurrere が語根。

Occur comes from Latin occurrere, formed from ob-, “toward” or “against,” assimilated to oc- before c, and currere, “to run.” Its early image was of something running toward or presenting itself.
