嗅覚は臭い分子を認識する五感の一つです。鼻の嗅覚受容体ニューロンが臭いを検出し、脳に信号を送ります。
Olfaction is the sense of smell or the process of smelling. It is a formal, scientific word used in biology, medicine, and psychology.

日常語の smell よりかなり専門的で、五感を並べる “vision, hearing, touch, taste, olfaction” のセットで覚えると定着しやすいです。形容詞 olfactory（嗅覚の）と必ずペアで見て、語頭 olfac- を見たら「におい関係」と反応できるようにするのが近道。ふだんは sense of smell、学術文脈では olfaction を使うことが多いので、日常語と専門語の距離感まで一緒に覚えると混同しません。

olfaction の語源・成り立ち Etymology
olfaction はラテン語 olfacere「匂いをかぐ」から来た語で、ol- は olere「匂いを発する」、-faction は facere「する」に通じます。さらに -ion がついて「嗅ぐ働き・作用」という形になりました。だから単に鼻で感じるのでなく「匂いを取りに行く感覚」です。関連語は olfactory。
"Olfaction" comes from Latin olfacere, meaning "to smell." That verb is linked to olere, "to give off a smell," and facere, "to do or make," and English added -ion to name the act or process. So the word developed from the idea of actively sensing smell; a related English word is olfactory.
