場所や目標に向かっている途中であることを表します。on the way to school のような物理的な移動にも、on the way to recovery / success のような抽象的な進展にも使えます。まだ到着・達成はしていないが、その方向へ進んでいる段階を述べる表現です。
Traveling toward a place or making progress toward a goal. The destination or result has not yet been reached, but movement toward it is underway.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず on the way をひとかたまりで「途中で」と覚える。way は「道」なので、on the way は文字どおり「道の上にいる→向かっている途中」の感覚。最後の to は到着ではなく「〜へ」の方向を足すだけで、on the way to school なら「学校へ行く途中」。go to は単に行く、arrive at は着く、on the way to はその中間の移動中と並べると定着しやすい。物理移動だけでなく on the way to success のように進捗にも使える。in the way（邪魔で）と混同しないこと。

wayは古英語weg（道・通路）から。ゲルマン祖語*wegaz（運ぶ・移動する）に遡り、ラテン語via（道）とも同根。道の途上にいるという空間的イメージが「途中で」の意味を生んだ。関連語：highway（幹線道路）、away（離れて）。
