解説 Definition
物や人がある表面や場所へ移動して、その上に乗ることを表す前置詞。単に位置を示す on と違い、飛び乗る、登る、移すなど、ある対象へ向かって上に移る動きや到達のニュアンスを伴う。
Onto means moving to a position on the surface of something. It is used when someone or something goes from one place to another and ends up on top of something else. It shows movement, unlike "on," which often describes a fixed position.

on を知っているなら、onto は『on に到達する動きつき』と覚えると残りやすいです。位置だけなら on、そこへ乗る・移す・飛び乗るなら onto。jump onto the table, climb onto the roof, move onto the next topic のように、『上に乗る』『次へ進む』場面でよく出ます。into が『中へ』なら、onto は『表面の上へ』という対比も有効。なお on to と2語で書く形もあり、動詞と続く語の組み合わせなのか、前置詞の onto なのかを文のまとまりで見分けると混同しにくいです。
`On` is a position, but `onto` adds movement toward that position. If something jumps, climbs, or moves and ends up on a surface, `onto` often fits. Compare it with `into`: `into` goes inside, `onto` goes onto the surface.

onto は古英語由来の on と to が結びついた前置詞で、もとは 2語の on to が16世紀ごろ一語化した形です。『上へ＋…へ』という感覚から、『〜の上に乗る・達する』という動き込みの「に」になると納得できます。関連語は into, upon.
