organelle は近代ラテン語 organella から入り、ラテン語 organum、さらにギリシャ語 organon「道具・器官」にさかのぼります。-elle は縮小辞なので、「細胞の中の小さな器官」という語感がそのまま意味になった語で、organ や organism が同系です。
Organelle came into English from modern Latin organella, based on Latin organum and Greek organon, meaning "tool" or "organ." The ending -elle is a small-form suffix, so the word originally meant something like "a little organ." That idea later became the name for the small specialized parts inside a cell.
