oriole は古フランス語 oriol を経て、ラテン語 aureolus「黄金色の」にさかのぼる語です。aurum や aureate も同じ aur- 系で、名に「金色」が埋め込まれていると分かると、この鳥が鮮やかな黄橙色の羽で呼ばれた理由が見えてきます。
