To overcompensate means to react too strongly in order to correct a weakness, problem, or past mistake. A person may do this emotionally, socially, or physically by trying harder than necessary. The word often suggests that the reaction becomes excessive and creates a new problem.

まず compensate =「埋め合わせる・補う」を押さえ、そこに over-「やりすぎ」が付くと考えると覚えやすいです。つまり「補うつもりが、補いすぎる」。単なる improve や fix より、不足や劣等感を意識して過剰反応する響きがあります。たとえば失敗を隠そうとして説明しすぎる、弱点を補おうとして頑張りすぎる場面で使われます。overreact と近いが、感情より「埋め合わせ行動」が中心だと整理すると残りやすいです。
