解説 Definition
光・日光・放射線・世間の注目などに必要以上にさらされることや、写真で光を取り込みすぎて白っぽく写ることを表す語です。健康被害を招く場合にも、人物や話題がメディアに出すぎて新鮮さや好感を失う場合にも使われます。
Overexposure means too much public attention, so that people become tired of seeing or hearing about someone or something. In photography, it also means that too much light reaches the image, making it look too bright.

over + exposure で「さらされすぎ」と分けると記憶しやすい。まず expose「さらす／見せる」、exposure「露出・接触・世間の注目」を押さえ、そこに over が付いて「必要以上に」のニュアンスになる。sun/light/radiation なら浴びすぎ、写真なら白飛び、celebrity の media exposure なら出すぎて飽きられる場面を思い浮かべると定着しやすい。単なる exposure は中立でも、overexposure は「多すぎて害や逆効果が出る」と覚える。
Split it into `over` + `exposure`. If `exposure` is being shown to something or made visible, `overexposure` is simply too much of it. over-は古英語で「過度に」、exposureはフランス語経由でラテン語 exponere（外へ ex-＋置く ponere）にさかのぼります。つまり「外に出しすぎる」が原義で、光や情報を当てすぎる感覚がそのまま意味になりました。関連語は expose、position です。
Overexposure combines over-, meaning "too much," with exposure.
