oxygen の語源・成り立ち Etymology
ギリシャ語 oxys（酸っぱい）+ -genes（生む）から仏の化学者ラヴォアジエが命名。「酸を生む元素」の意。oxys は oxide（酸化物）にも残る。実際は酸の本質ではないが、名前だけが定着した。
Oxygen was named in French by the chemist Lavoisier from Greek oxys, meaning "sharp" or "acid," and -genes, meaning "producing." So the name meant "acid-producing." That idea later turned out to be scientifically wrong, but the name remained; the same Greek root appears in oxide.
