passer は pass + -er からできた語。pass は古フランス語 passer を経て、ラテン語 passus「一歩」に関係する。試験を「通過する」人という発想から合格者の意味になる。
Passer is made from pass plus the suffix -er, meaning "a person who does something." Pass came through Old French passer and is related to Latin passus, meaning "step." From the idea of "going through" a test, passer came to mean someone who passes it.
