A persecutor is a person or group that treats someone cruelly or unfairly over a period of time. It is especially used when the harm is because of religion, politics, race, or beliefs. The word suggests repeated oppression, not just one act of harm.

persecutor はラテン語 persequi「どこまでも追う」に、-tor「する人」が付いた語です。per-「徹底的に」+ sequi「追う」なので、ただ後ろにいるのでなく『執拗に追い回す人』という像が迫害者の意味を生みました。pursue や sequence も同根です。
Persecutor comes from Latin persequi, meaning "follow persistently" or "pursue," with the agent ending -tor meaning "a person who does." It is built from per- "thoroughly" and sequi "follow."
