恐怖症

理屈では説明できない強い恐怖を示し、特定の物や状況に対して過剰な不安を抱くときに使う名詞。臨床的な意味合いもあり、カウンセリングや友人同士の会話で心理的背景を共有するのにも用いられる。
A phobia is an extremely strong and often unreasonable fear of a particular thing or situation. It is commonly used in psychology and everyday language for fears such as heights, spiders, or crowded spaces. A phobia is usually stronger than ordinary fear and can affect daily life.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
まず fear より一段強く、理屈では抑えにくい「特定のものへの強い恐怖」だとまとめて覚える。phobia は単独でも出るが、claustrophobia や arachnophobia のように「対象＋phobia」で症状名を作る型がとても多いので、接尾辞として認識すると記憶に残りやすい。social phobia も頻出。単なる dislike や「苦手」ではなく、avoid したくなるほど反応が強い語だと押さえると、fear との違いも整理しやすい。
Treat `-phobia` as a useful ending that means a strong fear, as in `arachnophobia` or `claustrophobia`. That makes `phobia` easy to spot in longer words too. It is much stronger than simple `dislike`, so connect it with reactions that make someone want to avoid something.
