Physicalism is the philosophical idea that everything that exists is physical, or can be explained by physical processes. It is used in discussions about the mind, consciousness, and the nature of reality.

physical を知っていれば入口は十分です。-ism は capitalism, Buddhism などと同じく「主義・立場」。つまり physicalism は「物理的なものを土台にして考える立場」と押さえるとよい語です。哲学では特に mind や consciousness まで physical な過程で説明しようとする点が核心。dualism（二元論）と並べて、「心を物理世界の外に置かない考え」と対比で覚えると、意味がぶれにくくなります。
Start from `physical`, then notice `-ism`, the ending for a system of thought or belief. That makes `physicalism` easier to store as a philosophy word. It is often learned beside `dualism`, so the contrast helps: one side keeps everything in the physical world. Remembering that pair makes the term much more stable.

physicalism は Greek physis「自然」に由来する physical に、主義を表す -ism が付いた語です。『自然なもの、物理的に扱えるものこそ基礎だ』という立場なので、心さえ自然法則の内側で考えようとする意味が語形から見えてきます。physics や physiology にも同じ physis の核があります。
Physicalism comes from physical, itself based on Greek physis, meaning "nature," plus the suffix -ism for a doctrine or system of thought. The root first referred to the natural world and things belonging to it. From there, the word developed into the name of a view that treats everything as part of the physical or natural order.
