slipshod の語源・成り立ち Etymology
「slipshod」は英語 slip「すべる」と shod「靴を履いた」から成り、shod は古英語 scōh/shod にさかのぼる。もとは「かかとを踏んでだらしなく靴を履いた」姿で、そこから仕事ぶりまで「ずさんな」に広がった。slipper や unshod も同じ足もとの語族。
Slipshod joins slip with shod, an old form meaning "wearing shoes." Shod goes back to Old English, and the first image was of someone wearing shoes loosely, as if the heel were crushed down and slipping. From that untidy appearance, the word later came to describe careless or rough work more generally.
