目の角膜に生じた炎症。細菌感染やウイルス感染、または外傷が原因となることがある眼病。
Keratitis is inflammation of the cornea, the clear front part of the eye. It is a medical term and is used when talking about eye disease or injury. It can involve pain, redness, and problems with vision.

まず医療語の型で覚えると残りやすいです。`-itis` が付けば「炎症」と考えるクセをつけると、dermatitis や tonsillitis と同じ仲間だと見抜けます。`keratitis` は目の病名としてよく `bacterial keratitis` `viral keratitis` の形で出てきます。`conjunctivitis` が結膜炎なのに対し、これは角膜の炎症。つまり「目の病名＋-itis＝炎症、しかも結膜ではなく角膜」と位置で区別すると混同しにくいです。
Train yourself to notice the medical ending `-itis`, which usually means inflammation, as in `dermatitis` or `tonsillitis`. That makes `keratitis` easier to store as one more `-itis` illness word. To avoid confusion, remember it beside `conjunctivitis`: both are eye terms, but they name inflammation in different parts.

keratitis はギリシャ語 keras（角・角質）由来の kerat- に、炎症を表す -itis が付いた語です。角膜が“角のように硬い膜”と捉えられた名残で、keratin や keratoma にも同じ kerat- が見えます。
"Keratitis" comes from Greek "keras," meaning "horn," which gave the medical combining form "kerat-," plus the suffix "-itis" for inflammation. The root reflects an old image of the cornea as a hard, horn-like tissue. The same root appears in English medical words such as "keratin" and "keratoma."
