Etymology
Piccadilly, the London place name, is generally traced to Pickadilly Hall, a house in the area during the seventeenth century. The house name was associated with piccadills, fashionable stiff or decorated collars connected with the fortune of its owner. Piccadill is often linked further with Spanish picado, “pierced or perforated,” referring to decorative edging. The spelling of the London name varied historically before Piccadilly became established.
