覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
この語義では、ストライキや抗議で職場・建物の前に立ち、看板などで訴える「人」を指す。a picket stood outside、organize a picket の場面で覚える。元は尖った杭、さらに軍の歩哨を指した語で、「一定地点に立って見張る人」から抗議活動の人へ意味が移った。picket fence の杭とは同じ語。
Picture one person standing outside a factory gate with a sign during a strike: that person is a picket. Learn phrases such as a picket outside the factory and workers organizing a picket. The historical image is useful: a picket was first a pointed stake and later a soldier or small guard unit stationed at a position. The idea of someone posted at a fixed place then developed into the labor-protest sense. Do not automatically equate it with protester, which is broader; a picket is specifically stationed at or near the location being targeted.

picket の語源・成り立ち Etymology
フランス語「piquet(尖った杭)」が語源で、動詞piquer(刺す)から派生。軍事用語で歩哨の杭囲いを意味し、そこから労働争議で工場前に立つ見張り行為を指すようになった。関連語:pike(槍)、pique(刺激する)。
Picket comes from French piquet, meaning a pointed stake, related to piquer, “to prick or pierce.” The word entered military vocabulary for a stake and then for a soldier or small body of troops stationed on guard. From this sense of being posted at a particular place, it developed in labor disputes to mean a person stationed outside a workplace to publicize a strike or discourage entry. The wooden slat in a picket fence preserves the older stake sense.
