鳩（はと）とは、ハト科に属する鳥類で、世界中に広く分布している。平和の象徴としてよく知られており、公園や街中でもよく見かけることができる。古くは伝書鳩として通信に利用されており、人間との関わりが深い鳥である。

pigeon は古フランス語 pigeon に由来し、その奥には俗ラテン語 pipio「ひな鳥」があり、鳴き声をまねた pip- 系の語と考えられます。peep や pipit も近い仲間で、鳩がもともと「ピーピー鳴く小鳥」と捉えられていた名残が感じられます。
"Pigeon" came from Old French pigeon and probably goes back to Vulgar Latin pipio, meaning a young chirping bird. The root is thought to imitate bird sounds, like pip-.
