pigeonhole は pigeon「鳩」+ hole「穴」から成り、元は鳩小屋の巣穴を指した語。pigeon は古フランス語経由で後期ラテン語 pipio「鳴くひな鳥」、hole は古英語 hol に由来し、机の小仕切りに似ることから『分類して押し込む』の動詞になった。関連語には peep と hollow がある。
