Etymology
Plying is the -ing form of ply. The verb came from Middle English plien and developed partly as a shortened form associated with apply. Its more distant history is connected with Latin plicare, “to fold,” although the modern senses developed through ideas of applying oneself repeatedly or keeping something in operation. From sustained work or repeated movement came the use of ply for ships, vehicles, and aircraft regularly traveling a route.
