polyp はラテン語 polypus を経て、ギリシャ語 polypous「足が多いもの」にさかのぼります。poly-「多い」＋ pous/pod-「足」から成り、関連語に polygon、pedal があります。もとは触手や突起が多く見えるものを表し、その「表面から突き出る形」の連想から、粘膜にできる突起状の病変にもこの名が使われました。
Polyp came into English through Latin polypus, from Greek polypous, literally "many-footed." It combines poly- "many" with pous/pod- "foot," a root also seen in words like podiatry and octopus. The name first referred to creatures with many tentacle-like parts, and later was used for growths in the body because of their similar shape.
