colon は単独でも覚えにくいので、まず semi-colon（;）の“半分ついた形”を知ると区別しやすいです。colon は「前で言い切って、後ろに説明・列挙・引用を出す」合図で、This is the problem: ... の形が典型。comma より切れ目が強く、period ほど終わらない感覚です。時刻 3:15 や比率でもよく見ます。なお同じ綴りで「大腸」の colon もあるので、文法・記号の話なら :、医学なら臓器、と文脈で切り替えると混乱しにくいです。

colon はラテン語 colon を経て、ギリシャ語 kolon「肢体・節」に由来します。古典修辞では文の一節を指し、そこから書き言葉で前後の節を区切り、後ろに説明や列挙を導く記号「:」の名になりました。同綴りの「大腸」も同じギリシャ語にさかのぼりますが、この行では句読点としての colon です。
