Postulating means suggesting or assuming that something is true as a starting point for discussion, reasoning, or theory. It is often used in formal, academic, or scientific contexts. The word does not mean proving something, but putting it forward as an idea.

postulating は、議論の出発点で いったんそう置く と覚えると残りやすいです。prove のように証明する語ではなく、まず前提を立ててそこから話を進める動き。assume より学術的で硬く、数学・哲学では postulate that ... や postulate the existence of ... が定番です。speculate が根拠の薄い推測なのに対し、postulate は理論の土台として仮定する語。-ing 形なら、その前提を置いている最中の感覚です。
Remember `postulate` as a formal academic word for setting a starting idea first. It is not like `prove`, and it is less loose than `speculate`. The common pattern `postulate that ...` is a strong memory hook.
