Prestressed describes a material or structure, especially concrete, that has been strengthened by applying stress to it in advance. This makes it better able to carry weight or resist cracking during use. The word is mainly used in construction and engineering.

pre- は「前もって」、stress は日常語の『ストレス』で覚えやすいが、ここでは精神的負担ではなく材料にかかる「応力」。見たらまず pre + stressed に切り、「使う前に、先に stress を与えたもの」と取る。建築では prestressed concrete という連語で覚えると強い。実際の荷重が来る前に内部を引っ張ったり圧縮したりしておくので、単なる stressed「応力がかかった」ではなく pre- 付きになる、という順番の感覚が記憶フックになる。
