解説 Definition
profiling は、人や物の特徴を分析して輪郭を描くプロファイリングという意味です。日本語のカタカナ語と近いですが、犯罪捜査だけでなく顧客分析や利用者の傾向分析にも使われます。
The process of collecting and analyzing characteristics, behavior, or other information in order to describe, classify, or predict something about people or objects. It is used in fields such as customer research, online services, and criminal investigation.

Profiling extends that image: instead of drawing only a physical outline, an analyst builds a structured picture from traits, habits, behavior, or data. Do not limit the word to criminal profiling. Common modern contexts include customer profiling and user profiling, where organizations study patterns to understand needs or predict behavior. The -ing ending marks the process of constructing and using such a profile.

Profiling is formed from the verb profile with the suffix -ing. Profile entered English through Italian profilo, meaning an outline or side view. The Italian term is associated with profilare, “to draw in outline,” built from pro- and filare, a verb connected with filo, “thread” or “line,” ultimately from Latin filum. The meaning later expanded from drawing contours to describing or analyzing defining characteristics.
