programmatically は program＋-matic＋-ally から成り、program はギリシャ語 programma（pro-「前に」＋ gramma「書かれたもの」）に由来します。『前もって書かれた手順どおりに』という感覚からプログラム的にの意となり、関連語に program や programmer があります。
Programmatically comes from programmatic plus the adverb ending -ally. Program goes back through Greek programma, from pro-, "before," and gramma, "something written." The core idea is of something written out in advance, which later developed into the sense of acting according to a planned set of steps; related words include program and programmer.
