中英語 poding で、古フランス語 boudin（ソーセージ・腸詰め）に由来するとされる。元は動物の腸に詰め物をした料理を指し、やがて蒸し菓子や甘いデザート全般へ意味が広がった。日本語の「プリン」はこの pudding がなまった形。
Pudding appeared in Middle English as forms such as poding. It is generally traced to Old French boudin, referring to a sausage or food enclosed in an animal intestine.
