purserはpurse「財布」+ -er「人」から成り、purseは古英語経由でラテン語bursa「皮の袋、財布」にさかのぼる。もとは「財布を預かる人」なので、船や飛行機で金銭や備品を管理する係になった。purseやbursaryにも袋から会計へ広がる感覚が残る。
Purser comes from purse plus the agent ending -er. Purse goes back through Old English and Old French to Latin bursa, meaning a bag or purse.
