A purser is an officer on a ship or aircraft who handles money, records, and passenger services. The word is especially used for senior cabin crew on airplanes or staff on ships. It is a job title rather than a general word.

purserはpurse「財布」+ -er「人」から成り、purseは古英語経由でラテン語bursa「皮の袋、財布」にさかのぼる。もとは「財布を預かる人」なので、船や飛行機で金銭や備品を管理する係になった。purseやbursaryにも袋から会計へ広がる感覚が残る。
Purser comes from purse plus the agent ending -er. Purse goes back through Old English and Old French to Latin bursa, meaning a bag or purse. The word first meant a person in charge of the money bag, and from there it developed into a title for someone managing money and supplies, especially on ships and aircraft.
