4行で構成される詩のような韻文形式。特にシェイクスピアのソネットで使用される詩形です。
A quatrain is a group of four lines in a poem, or a short poem made of four lines. It is a common form in poetry, and the lines may follow a rhyme pattern.
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
qua-/quad- を見たら「4」の仲間だと反応できるようにすると覚えやすい。quarter, quadrant, quadruple と同じ系列で、quatrain も「4つ単位」の語。意味は poem 全体ではなく、詩の中の「4行ひとかたまりの節」。stanza や verse はもっと広い言い方だが、quatrain は行数が4だと限定される。特に sonnet では three quatrains and a couplet の形でよく出るので、4行ブロックが3回続く場面と一緒に覚えると定着する。refrain（繰り返し句）とは別語。
The beginning `quat-` links to the idea of four, like in `quadrant` or `quadruple`. So `quatrain` is a poetry word for a four-line unit, not for a whole poem. It is especially easy to remember with the sonnet pattern `three quatrains and a couplet`.
