A rachis is the main central stem or axis of a structure, especially in biology. It is often used for the middle shaft of a feather or the main stem of a compound leaf. This is a technical word and is mostly used in science or medicine.

rachis はギリシャ語 rhakhis「背骨・背すじ」がラテン語を経て入った語です。羽や葉の中央の軸を、体の背骨のような「中心の筋」に見立てた名で、「軸」の意味がよく見えます。関連語は rachial, rachitic。
Rachis comes from Greek rhakhis, meaning "spine" or "backbone," and reached English through Latin. The word was then used for the main axis of a feather or leaf because it looked like a central backbone. So its meaning moved from the spine of a body to any similar central supporting line.
