receive は古フランス語 recevoir、さらにラテン語 recipere にさかのぼり、re-「後ろへ」+ capere「取る」から成ります。そこに「〜するもの」の -er と複数の -s が付き、receivers は本来「受け取るもの」から「受信機」の意になりました。関連語は receive、reception。
