recheck は re-「再び」+ check から成る語で、check は古フランス語を経て、もとはペルシア語 shah「王」に由来するチェス用語にさかのぼる。checkmate と同根で、『王手をかけて立ち止まらせる』感覚があるので、「再確認する」はもう一度止めて点検することだと見えてくる。
Recheck combines re- meaning "again" with check. Check came through Old French and goes back to Persian shah, "king," from the language of chess, where it meant putting the king under attack and forcing a pause. In English, that idea widened from stopping or controlling to examining carefully, so recheck means to examine once more. It is related to checkmate.
