Outpatients are people who receive medical care at a hospital or clinic without staying there overnight. They come for treatment, tests, or checkups and then go home the same day. The word is used in healthcare and contrasts with inpatients.

outpatients は out-「外に」+ patient「患者」+ 複数語尾 -s。patient はラテン語 pati「苦しむ・耐える」に由来し、patience や impatient も同根です。患者とは本来「苦しむ人」で、そこに out が付くので「病院の外で診る外来患者」だと腑に落ちます。
