冗長性
解説 Definition
redundancies は redundancy(冗長性、重複、余剰)の複数形です。システム設計では予備の仕組みを指すことがあり、文章や作業では不要な重複を指すこともあります。
Redundancies are repeated, unnecessary elements in writing or work, or additional components built into a system so that it can continue operating if one component fails. The word is the plural form of “redundancy.”
覚え方のコツ Memory Tip
redundancies は redundancy「冗長性・重複」の複数形です。子音字+y で終わるため y を i に替えて -es を付け、語尾は /siz/ となります。文章では remove redundancies「不要な重複を除く」、システムでは add redundancies「予備系を複数設ける」となり、同じ語でも不要物と安全策の両面があります。
Link redundancies to the singular redundancy. Since the singular ends in consonant + y, change y to i and add -es: redundancy becomes redundancies, with a final /siz/ sound. Keep its two common contexts separate. In editing, redundancies are needless repetitions that should be removed. In engineering or networking, redundancies are extra backup components that improve reliability. The older image is something overflowing beyond what is strictly needed; that excess may be wasteful in a report but protective in a technical system.
例文
The network has several redundancies to prevent service outages.
そのネットワークにはサービス停止を防ぐための冗長性がいくつかあります。
We removed redundancies from the report before sending it.
送付前に、報告書から不要な重複を取り除きました。
These redundancies make the backup system more reliable.
これらの冗長性によって、バックアップシステムの信頼性が高まります。

redundancies の語源・成り立ち Etymology
redundancies は redundancy の複数形で、語源はラテン語 redundare「溢れ出る」です。re-「再び」+ unda「波」から、「必要以上にあふれる」感覚で冗長性を表します。関連語は redundant, inundate。
Redundancies is the plural of redundancy, formed by changing final y to i and adding -es. Redundancy derives from Latin redundantia, related to redundare, “to overflow.” Redundare combines re- with undare, “to surge like waves,” from unda, “wave.” The notion of overflowing produced the sense of excess or unnecessary repetition. In engineering, the same idea of having more than the minimum developed a positive sense: extra components provide backup if another component fails.
