解説 Definition

reeds は reed(葦、アシ)の複数形です。湿地や川辺に生える細長い植物を指し、単数の植物ではなく複数本の葦をまとめて言うときに使います。

More than one tall, slender plant of the grass family that typically grows in wet ground or shallow water beside rivers, lakes, and marshes. Reeds often form dense groups that provide cover for birds and other wildlife.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

reed「葦」に複数語尾 -s を付けた形で、語末は有声音 /d/ の後なので /z/ と発音します。一本なら a reed、群生なら reeds。tall reeds along the river や birds among the reeds の情景を描き、湿地や水辺に立つ細長い茎の集まりとして覚えましょう。楽器の reed とは同じ語の別義です。

Reeds is the plural of reed, formed by adding -s. Since reed ends in the voiced sound /d/, the plural ending is pronounced /z/. Use a reed for one stem and reeds for several or for a whole stand of plants. Picture tall reeds growing along a quiet river and birds hiding among the reeds at the edge of a marsh. That wetland scene fixes the intended botanical meaning. The same word reed can also name the vibrating part of certain musical instruments, but the examples here refer specifically to plants.

reeds の語源・成り立ち Etymology

reedsはreed「葦」の複数形で、古英語hreod、さらにゲルマン祖語kreut-にさかのぼります。湿地に立つ細長い草を指す古い語で、その形から楽器のリードや「頼りない人」の比喩にも広がりました。関連語はreedy、reed-pipe

Reeds is the regular plural of reed. Reed comes from Old English hrēod, an old Germanic word for the tall, narrow plants commonly found in marshes and beside water. The botanical sense is ancient. Because hollow or flexible plant stems were used in simple pipes, the word later became associated with wind instruments and eventually with the thin vibrating piece called a reed. Here, however, the plural refers only to multiple wetland plants.
