覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

reefs は reef の規則的な複数形で、語末に -s を付け、/riːfs/ と発音します。coral reefs「サンゴ礁群」、reefs near the island「島近くの礁」のように、複数の礁や広い範囲の礁を指します。魚、ダイバー、浅い海という場面と結び付けると定着します。

Link reefs to the singular reef and simply add -s; it is a regular plural pronounced /riːfs/. Picture several shallow underwater structures around islands, with fish living around them and divers studying them. The frequent phrase coral reefs strongly connects the word with marine habitats, while rocky reefs may also be meant. Use reef for one formation and reefs for more than one or for multiple reef areas. Do not confuse reefs with wreaths, which are decorative rings of flowers or leaves.

reefs の語源・成り立ち Etymology

古ノルド語rif(岩礁)に由来し、中低地ドイツ語refやオランダ語rifとも同系。航海用語として広まった。関連語:ridge(尾根)、rift(裂け目)。海面下の岩の隆起を指し、サンゴが形成する構造にも用いられるようになった。

Reefs is the regular plural of reef, formed by adding -s. Reef entered English through maritime usage and is related to Middle Low German ref and Dutch rif, terms for a ridge or rocky formation in the sea; Old Norse rif is also closely related. The word first referred especially to hazardous rock formations and later came to include large structures built by coral organisms.
