解説 Definition

形容詞として「再確立された・復旧した」という状態を表します。制度・関係・通信などが、一度失われたり途絶えたりした後に、再び機能するようになった状態です。

Reestablished describes something that has been set up, restored, or made effective again after it had disappeared, stopped functioning, or been disrupted. It is commonly applied to organizations, services, relationships, connections, or social order.

使い方 Usage

  • a reestablished committee / connection のように名詞の前に置き、再設置された組織や復旧した接続を表します。 Place reestablished before a noun, as in a reestablished committee or connection, to describe an organization set up again or a restored connection.

使い分け Common distinctions

  • established は「確立された」。reestablished は、一度存在していたものが途絶えた後に戻った点を強調します。 Established means set up or made effective. Reestablished emphasizes that something existed before, was interrupted, and has been restored.

覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

re-「再び」+ establish「確立する」+ -ed。「存在していた→途絶えた→戻った」の順に思い浮かべましょう。establish の語末 /ʃ/ は無声音なので、-ed は /t/ と発音します。

Break the word into re-, “again,” establish, “set up,” and -ed. Picture three stages: existing, interrupted, restored. Establish ends in the voiceless sound /ʃ/, so the -ed ending is pronounced /t/.

The reestablished committee met for the first time in three years.

再設置された委員会は3年ぶりに会合を開きました。

The town welcomed the reestablished bus service after months of disruption.

reestablished の語源・成り立ち Etymology

reestablishedは re-「再び」+ establish + -ed から成り、establish は古フランス語を経てラテン語 stabilire「安定させる」にさかのぼります。stable や state と同根で、「もう一度しっかり立て直された」という意味に結びつきます。

Reestablished is formed from re-, meaning “again,” establish, and the past-participial suffix -ed. Establish entered English through Old French and ultimately traces to Latin stabilire, “to make firm,” from stabilis, “stable.” The prefix therefore adds the idea of making something firm or operational once more. As an adjective, the past participle describes the resulting restored state rather than the action alone.
