知的な判断や理解が十分でなく、賢さや思慮に欠ける様子を表す形容詞。人そのものだけでなく、発言・判断・行動などについても使われ、浅はかで配慮が足りないという否定的な評価を含む。単に知識が少ないというより、考え方に理性や分別が感じられない場面で使われる。
If someone or something is unintelligent, they do not show much ability to think, learn, or understand. It is used to describe a person, comment, action, or decision that seems foolish or lacking in intelligence. It can sound critical, so it is often stronger than simply saying "not smart."

un- で『〜でない』、intelligent で『知的な』なので、まず『intelligent の反対』と押さえると早いです。smart の反対を言うときの、やや硬めで評価の厳しい語。人だけでなく an unintelligent remark / decision のように発言や判断にも使えます。単に知識不足というより、考えが浅い・判断が鈍い感じ。ignorant が『知らない』寄りなのと区別すると覚えやすいです。unhappy, unfair と同じ un- の否定パターンだと気づけると定着します。

unintelligent は un-「〜でない」+ intelligent から成る語です。intelligent はラテン語 intelligere に由来し、inter-「間で」+ legere「選ぶ」から「違いを見分ける」が核なので、un- が付くと「見分ける知性がない」と腑に落ちます。intellect や select も同じ legere 系です。
