覚え方のコツ Memory Tip

regents は regent「摂政」の規則的な複数形で、語末に -s を付け、/ˈriːdʒənts/ と発音します。君主が幼少・病気・不在の間に代理で統治する複数の人物を指し、a council of regents の場面で覚えましょう。単なる advisers「助言者」ではなく、君主に代わる統治権を持つ点が重要です。

Regents is the regular plural of regent: add -s, pronounced /s/ after the final /t/, to make /ˈriːdʒənts/. Picture several officials ruling a kingdom until a young monarch becomes old enough to govern. Useful historical phrases include “a council of regents” and “the regents ruled the kingdom.” A regent is more than an adviser: the person exercises governing authority on behalf of a sovereign who cannot rule. In some modern institutions, especially universities, regents are members of a governing board, but the examples here focus on temporary royal government.

regents の語源・成り立ち Etymology

ラテン語 regens(支配する者)から。動詞 regere(導く・支配する)の現在分詞形が名詞化したもの。関連語:regime(体制)、region(地域=統治される領域)。王に代わり国を「導く」役割を担う者という意味が原義。

Regents is the plural of regent. Regent came through French from Latin regens, the present participle of regere, meaning “to guide, direct, or rule.” It therefore originally meant “one who rules.” The same Latin verb lies behind several English words associated with rule and direction. In monarchy, regent became the title for someone who governs temporarily in place of a sovereign; regents refers to two or more such rulers.
